Instructions
  1. Set the Instant Pot to Sauté and add the oil. Let it heat until the oil shimmers, and then add the chicken, fresh or frozen to the oil. Brown for 3 minutes on each side.
  2. While the chicken is browning, combine the remaining ingredients in a small bowl.
  3. Scatter the onion around the chicken and cover with sauce.
  4. Set the Instant Pot to Manual and adjust to high pressure. Adjust the time to 20 minutes for frozen or 10 minutes for fresh, making sure the pot is in sealing mode.
  5. Meanwhile, line a sheet pan with foil and set broiler to high. When chicken is finished, switch the steam release handle to venting. Allow the pressure to release and then take off lid.
  6. Carefully remove the chicken with tongs (it will be falling apart) and place on the lined pan, under the broiler, for 3 minutes per side.
  7. While chicken is browning, switch the pot mode to Sauté to reduce and thicken the sauce. Pour the thickened sauce over the chicken when it has finished browning. Enjoy!

My 1st IP meal. It was sooooo DELISH! Thanks for sharing! I added a cup of water before cooking under pressure.

Was my first attempt at chicken and i got the “burn” message even on low pressure. Im wishing i read the reviews earlier and added water.

My hubbys first time with the IP. He followed the instructions, and I thought it was weird that the only liquid was BBQ sauce and a little leftover oil. Sure enough, it read ‘burn’ as it cooked. Add water to thin the liquid a bit. We’re pretty bummed because it looks amazing!

Wish I had read the review prior to making this recipe because I got the burn error message.

I’m making this again. The first time I got the burn message, shut it down before any damage to chicken thighs and set it for low pressure for 5 min. Chicken was done and good. This time I got burn message AGAIN, I shut it down, chicken is done. I put my second batch in AFTER adding a cup of water and am trying it again using the trivet to keep the chicken off the bottom of the pot. I thought these receipes were tried and approved by instant pot!

We didnt see the reviews that said to add water so when my husband and I got the burn message we added a little beer. My husband doesn’t even like chicken and he loves this recipe

Okay so I should have read the reviews before making this. Yes I got the burn message fixed it all up and it was very good! I added some extra garlic and some chili powder 1/2 tsp to mine because we like a little extra kick and it was so good! My 10 year old loved it my 3 year old said it was a little spicy but still ate it!

I got the burn signal, stopped stirred the pot, added tiny bit of water because there was a lot of sauce.
    Very tasty
1st time using my instant pot.

Like others have said, all this needs is about a cup of water and it turns out perfect with no burn message….however i think next time i make this ill try it with chicken breasts instead of thighs. They are just a little too fatty for my taste.

Very tasty and easy. Followed the recipe as is except for the following:
    – Used skinless thighs
    – Browned the thighs in cast iron pan, all 6 at once
    – Added 1 cup of water (thanks to previous comments)

Still a newbie as I only made ine item previously. Found reviews after I started so I added chicken broth ( friends recommendations) and it is thickening now. Its cooking as you guys said it would so I expect awesomeness. Oh I used legs instead if thighs.

I wasn’t a fan of the sauce.. we made our own bbq sauce abd used that ..chicken was cooked perfectly but when put in the oven broiling it made it dry. I say skip it or cook it less time..

  14. Mckaross
    Mckaross says:

I skipped the broiling and it turned out great! It was taking the sauce a long time to thicken, so we had runny sauce. But after sitting in the fridge over night it was perfect for leftovers

As a general rule, and following advice I read online, we ignore the “burn” message often seen on the 10 in 1 IP. Hasnt been a problem yet and it happens somewhat frequently. Apparently some kind of calibration issue/ design flaw that triggers this.

  16. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

    Hi Brian K,

Burn Feature activates when there is heating distribution issues. It is a safety feature and will limit the cooking temperature when activated. This is not a design flaw.

    Hi cheryl colson,

Yes, you can use bone-in thighs for this recipe, just remember that the cooking time will be a bit longer.

This was a strange Dish because it was mostly a ketchup barbeque sauce out of a bottle with some chicken. Not exactly what I would call a healthy meal.

    Instant Pot says:

    Hi Edgester,

Our apologies, this recipe relies heavily on the chicken releasing moisture. Depending on your brand of chicken it may not release enough liquid. I would recommend adding a couple of tablespoons of water after sauteing to deglaze and to ensure that there is enough liquid. Depending on the brands of ingredients used in the sauce it may be thicker than intended.
